Cellular Review Of Cancer Risk

The cellular-telephone industry, which has been stung by charges that the use of cellular phones causes brain cancer, says an initial review of existing studies has found no such link.

"The studies we have analyzed so far do not suggest a linkage with cancer," George Carlo, a scientist who is directing the industry's research program, said on Friday.

The industry began the research program six months ago after a Florida man asserted that his wife's fatal brain tumor had been caused by her frequent use of a portable cellular telephone.

Thomas Wheeler, president of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, a trade group, said the research effort was intended to try to discover if there were any links between phone use and cancer.

Mr. Wheeler said the initial research had shown "there is no relationship between exposure to cellular frequencies and cancer."

He said the entire research would be reviewed later by the Food and Drug Administration and other Federal agencies.

In public, cell phone violations happen because your phone causes those near you to endure two unwelcome events: extra interruption and extra noise. If you use your phone in ways that counter these two rude factors, you can get away with breaking a few cell phone etiquette norms.

Disguise Your Ringtone

Instead of using blaring midi tunes to announce your incoming calls, consider camouflage cell phone ringtones. If you can't find the perfect tone, many ringtone software packages can help you record your own socially-acceptable sounds. Such ringtones blend into the background and keep you from being the object of society's scorn. Here are a few favorites:

Cough or sneeze ringtone—you can even go through the motions for added effect
Whisper ringtone—no one will be able to tell that it's your pocket doing the whispering

I have a friend who used to phone me, begin a conversation, then put me on hold to converse with another caller. After politely waiting the first few times, I started hanging up. If you're left hanging on a call, don't criticize or complain when the caller returns, leave instead. Eventually, your caller will get the message loud and clear.

That same attitude will save your sanity in public too, but only if you have a knack for drama. If a noisy cell phone caller is in your face, leave. If you're trapped somewhere (like a train or a plane) and have patiently endured the loud, one-way conversation but can't escape because the bathroom is occupied, do the next best thing—have a coughing fit.

Make it a good one—wheeze, hack, double over until your face turns red. You're caller's ears will be just as inconvenienced as yours were, and the cell phone user will hang up. At that point, straighten up, clear your throat and remark, "Well! I'm glad that's over!"

1 .. Nokia 888 Communicator

Nokia definitely has the most interesting concept phones. Nokia 888 Communicator is a striking futuristic concept phone. The phone, which uses liquid batteries, speech recognition, flexible touchscreen and touch-sensitive body cover,is designed by Tamer Nakisci and won the Nokia Design Award

2 .. Nokia Aeon

Nokia Aeon was presented by Nokia on their website in the Research & Development section. What is so great about this phone is that it looks like it will actually go into production next February. Of course, its just a rumor, but still, makes us hope to actually see it someday in the GSM shop. All we know about it for now is that its a touchscreen phone and it looks fantastic.

3 .. Sky "Sleak n Slim"
"Sleek & Slim" from SKY is another concept based on touchscreen technology. The phone has a discretely glowing touchpad, hideaway keys and generally utterly-fashionable minimalist design.

4 .. Benq-Siemes "Snaked"
Benq designers thought of women too and presented Snaked. This is a "reptile" looking phone, creepy somehow, but still is very cool. The Snaked is a fashion phone for sport loving women, because it also has body monitoring sensors to help the ladies keep those fine shapes.

5 .. What You See is What You Get Concept
One thing is for sure about this concept phone…they could've named it shorter. Designed by Pei-Hua Hang, the phone's name comes from the fact that this concept no longer uses an LCD as viewfinder for the digital camera, instead it uses a transparent frame. And of course, interaction is made through a touchscreen

6 .. Retroxis By Dark Label
If most phones presented here will never be sold in store for sure, the Retroxis concept phone from Dark Label looks kinda human, and makes us hope we'll be able to get one of these one day. Designed by Lim Sze Tat the phone is encased in high polished polycarbonate renowned for its lightweight and toughness and has an invisible OLED display that silently hides away when inactive.

7 .. Benq-Siemens "The Blackbox"
Black Box designed by Benq-Siemens uses a touch screen as its keypad and, depending on the functions you are using, the touch screen changes the control layout immediately.

8 .. NEC Tag
Somehow similar to the Snaked concept, the NEC Tag is a flexible phone concept that can be , for example, hung from a belt or wrapped around the user's arm. Interesting is that the phone has shape-memorizing material and sensors that allows the phone to change its shape according to the mode.

9 .. TripleWatch
Though the idea of a cellphone watch is not so new, the TripleWatch designed by Manon Maneenawa has an interesting triple flip technique that allows the user to transform the watch into a normal cellphone. When used as a wrist watch, the phone has a speaker button that allows the user to answer the phone and hang up while driving.

10 .. Asus Aura

Nokia's N95 Smartphone

While it shares much with the Nokia N80 in terms of both design and functionality, Nokia's N95, the subject of this review, takes the capabilities of a mobile phone to a new level. On paper, at least, there appears to be little that this Finnish wonder can't do. It has quad-band GSM/EDGE support and 2100MHz UMTS as well as a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, a built-in GPS receiver, Bluetooth stereo support, and 802.11b/g WLAN support.

This is not your generic slider handset.

Physical Aspects

The Nokia N95 is a somewhat large slider form factor handset. It measures 100mm x 53mm x 20mm (3.9" x 2.1" x .8") in size and weighs 121g (4.3oz), which is to say it is by no means in the running for the thinnest and lightest handset on the market. The front of the N95 has a normal looking silver paint finish, but the sides and back of the device make use of a soft touch style deep burgundy color paint that has a very nice feel to it. Nokia has done a far better job with the slider mechanism on the N95 than it did on the N80. The slider in the N95 relies on a spring loaded mechanism instead of the friction based design used in the N80, which tended to slide open on its own. On top of that, the slider on the N95 moves in two directions, exposing the keypad when slid one way, and a series of 4 dedicated media playback keys when slid the other way.

The media keys don't have the best feel to them, and can not be located by touch alone since they consist of only markings on a plastic strip. Still, they are fine for their intended purpose. The regular alphanumeric keypad has its own issues, though. The keys are very stiff and located even lower on the slider than on the N80, which makes them a bit of a tough reach for somebody with large hands. The keys are also a fair bit smaller than those on the N80, making things all the more difficult. For their part, the d-pad and its dedicated center select button work very well, as do the rest of the dedicated keys that surround them.

On the right side of the device a dedicated two-stage camera shutter button can be found (half press to focus, full press to snap the photo) and a photo playback/gallery button that is similar to what one would expect to find on a dedicated digital camera. Pressing the button once will display the last photo on the screen, pressing it again will bring up the photo gallery. Also located on the right side of the N95 are the volume rocker switch and one of the two stereo speakers. The other speaker is located on the left side of the phone, along with the 3.5mm stereo headset jack, the Infrared port, and the covered microSD memory card slot.

Nokia N95 (ZOOM)

The N95 gives up the Nokia proprietary pop-port and instead has a miniUSB connector located on its bottom edge. The miniUSB port can not be used for charging, though, a task that is handled by a new style mini Nokia power connector. The top edge of the N95 is home to the power switch, which is also handy for changing profiles when pressed briefly. Out back one finds the 5 megapixel autofocus camera and its flash. The camera lens is protected by a cover that is opened and closed with a slider switch. Opening and closing the cover activates and deactivates the camera. A secondary, QVGA resolution camera is located on the front of the device, just above the display, and is intended for 3G video calling.

Overall, I believe Nokia did a fine job on the physical design of the N95. The keypad design is the only aspect that I can find fault with, and given the constraints Nokia was working within, I think it is still quite acceptable.

No mapping does work with the network turned off. If you read the manual then you will know that you can download whole maps from a free program called Nokia maps onto your memory card. This will stop your phone downloading maps over the network as you need them. You can also download maps via wifi if say you're stood outside a place which has free wifi

Oh and what! the camera IS 5 mega pixels as I've tested it. Goodness knows how many times and you can actually turn the phone from 3mp to 5mp. Just search Google and you will find websites like allaboutsymbian.com that go into full in depth reviews as they test the phone over periods of months and have full image and video samples.
